5:15pm - James McLean

James McLean - drumset

James McLean is a drummer from Melbourne, who works equally as a solo artist, bandleader, and ensemble member.  He is fast establishing himself as a leading voice in Australian jazz and improvised music, as recognised by being awarded the 2016 Freedman Jazz Fellowship - becoming the first drummer to receive the award.

In early 2018, James completed his PhD research at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying the application of embodied cognition to the development of solo drumset repertoire.  In addition to an academic thesis, this research has produced two solo drumset recordings: Counter Clockwork (2015), and Oscillator (2018).   For tonight's performance, James will be performing works from these releases.

6:15pm - Ornette Jones

Shaun Rammers - saxophone and clarinet
Joe O’Connor - piano
Hugh Harvey - drums

Ornette Jones is a trio featuring Shaun Rammers on saxophone and clarinet, Joe O’Connor on piano and Hugh Harvey on drums. Though the name may suggest otherwise, the band is not a tribute to someone called Ornette Jones, but is just a good old generic name leaving space for interpretation. This idea continues into the music, with the trio playing music based on a collection of pre-composed motifs which are used as a launch pad into improvisation, leaving plenty of space for the listener and themselves to interpret and explore these musical landscapes.
