“Cooper was forging connections between folk and experimental musics long before America got New or Weird…”
- The Wire

English guitarist Mike Cooper has been a musical explorer for over 40 years, in various genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations. He may be the only guitarist who has performed with both John Lee Hooker and Keith Rowe (not at the same time, that would be weird!).

His 1969 l.p. “Oh Really!?” on Pye records is widely acclaimed as one of the best acoustic blues albums of the period. In the late 1970’s he began to develop a parallel career and establish himself on the avant-garde and free-improvised music scene, forming The Recedents with saxophonist Lol Coxhill and drummer Roger Turner- a free improvising trio now in its third decade. In 2007 he released Hipshot Guitars – a 3CD compilation of 37 avant garde guitarists which opens with Melbourne based guitar torturer Gary Butler.

Cooper and Butler get together with Warren Burt, Houston Dunleavy, Rod Cooper and Rafal Kaczmarek for two nights of musical exploration, improvisation and miscellaneous noisemaking. It will be weird – but interesting.
