Drawing from Hegel’s philosophy of Combination without loss: Sublation is a trio of three voices, distinct both compositionally and within improvisation, combined to create cohesive ensemble statements. Sublation challenges the idea of the exclusive, playing music that is both rooted in the jazz idiom, and stylistically open, exploring collective improvisation and compositional development, aiming to be both creative and accessible. Sublation has it both ways.

Electric bassist, Mick Meagher, and vocalist, Jenny Barnes, began improvising together in January 2016. The first public offering by this duo can be heard on their debut album Cluster recorded in July 2016. Cluster comprises of 4 improvisations, and is available through bandcamp.

Mick Meagher’s exploration into low frequency sound performance on the electric bass has been documented on two solo bass recordings - Droning Bells & Shudder, both available through bandcamp. An inherent darkness and heaviness is central to this sonic investigation of low frequency resonance, dissonance in low registers, and a minimalistic approach to improvisation.

Jenny Barnes’ current work is a rigorous investigation into sound as meaning and the absence of sound in meaning. Her work as an improvising vocalist embodies the spontaneity, expression and empathetic experience of language and language acquisition.

"Cluster is an outing of two of the most creative individual musicians on the scene today. Musically telepathic, Jenny and Mick flow with ease through these compositions, creating a journey of surprises and joy to the ears and mind. Music that truly can't be categorised, beyond being most excellent and beautiful." - Scott Tinkler
